Since its establishment by the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Nicholas Tarling Charitable Trust in 2023, the Nicholas Tarling Aria Competition has grown from an inaugural field of more than 50 entrants into an increasingly international competition attracting singers from across New Zealand and overseas.

Over its first four years, the Competition has expanded to embrace singers at different stages of their musical journeys, while many former winners and finalists have gone on to further success in New Zealand and internationally. These include appearances in the Kiri Te Kanawa Song Quest, major Australian singing competitions, international young artist programmes and postgraduate study at leading music institutions.
